Choose Your Own Adventure Book

Yesterday, one of my favorite clients said to me, ”Cherie, it is as though my brain is constantly writing a Choose Your Own Adventure Book, that I haven’t even read yet!  If this happens, then that will happen, but if this other thing happens, then that will happen or maybe this could happen…..and so on and so on….”
Notice…most of us do this……aaaaallllll day long.  We invent possibilities and outcomes for every encounter and situation, then we come up with alternates which then allow us to create new and different problems that we don’t even have in reality.  Our brain can go from choosing what shirt to wear in the morning to how we are going to get fired and contract the West Nile virus in a matter of nano-seconds.  I don’t have to tell you that none of this is even remotely useful….but us silly humans keep doing it anyway.
Steve Jobs, in his speech at Stanford in 2005 said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards.  You have to trust in something, your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well worn path, and that will make all the difference.”
His speech is brilliant and simple and so wise.  It is easy to look back and see how we got to be where we are today. But specifically mapping out our future is nearly impossible.  I am not saying not to have goals and dreams.  Absolutely YES!   But you must always remember that the future holds possibilities WAY bigger than your little brain can imagine.
All we can ever do, is discover who we really want to be in the world. Ask yourself the question, “How do I want to be known?” or “What contribution do I want my life to be in the world?”  Then set your compass. Go out and start being that person and start having conversations about that.  Have lots of conversations about that.  Conversations are where the “dots” happen, where life gets created and where your future gets built.
I know that I am here to have people experience being safe and loved and give them the confidence to live the fullest expression of their most authentic self.
